GAPs researcher Dr. Zeynep Şahin-Mencütek featured in the podcast Displacement in Compartments of Solidarity by Radio Unheard
Radio Unheard, a podcast exploring the political nature of art and the intersections of art and politics, featured Dr. Zeynep Şahin-Mencütek (Bonn International Centre for Conflict Studies) in its 11 July 2025 episode. As a coordinator of the GAPs project, Dr. Şahin-Mencütek discussed the Temporary Protection system—an emergency measure designed to provide immediate protection for people unable to return home during situations of mass displacement.
She explained why the EU chose not to activate the Temporary Protection Directive during the 2015 refugee influx or the more recent arrival of Afghan refugees, yet applied it in response to Ukrainian refugees. Drawing on a recent GAPs publication, she also reflected on shifting public opinion and political discourse around migration, noting an increasing trend toward restrictive policies.
In light of these developments, Dr. Şahin-Mencütek emphasized the importance of adopting a decentered approach in migration studies and amplifying diverse voices.
