Created by Law No. 86-80 of August 9, 1986 , the University of Monastir took its new name under Decree No. 91-1999 of December 31, 1991 to become the University of the Center providing scientific and educational supervision. on establishments in the governorates of Sousse, Monastir, Kairouan and Mahdia. For the academic year 1987-1988 a little more than 6000 students were registered and spread over 13 institutions
The University of the Center has seen its numbers grow considerably from year to year, thus bringing together 45,000 students in 2000-2001 and nearly 60,000 in 30 establishments . On the occasion of the celebration of Knowledge Day (July 16, 2004), the University of the Center was split into 3 and received a new name "University of Sousse" , by virtue of decree n ° 2115-2004 of 02 September 2004 .
The University of Sousse provides a range of academic and professional training in basic sciences, legal, economic and management, technical, agronomic, medical, paramedical, arts and crafts, letters and human sciences .
Hassen Boubakri
is Professor-Doctor of Geography and Migration Studies, at the University of Sousse (US) (Faculty of Arts and Humanities), & member of the Research Laboratory “SYFACTE” at the University of Sfax (USf). He is also the Tunisian partner (US) and CI (Co-Investigator) in the following European Research programs (Horizon Europe): “GAPs” Project, ERC Project. “SolRoutes” (Solidarities and migrants' routes across Europe at large); ERC Project “Vital Elements” and Postcolonial Moves: Forensics as the Art of Paying Attention in a Mediterranean Harbour Town” and Member of the Academic Consortium of «La 𝙉𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙙 𝙃𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙚» (a Transnational travelling Theater Play & Cultural Center focusing on 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻/Creative Europe). In addition Boubakri is currently International Fellow at the ICM (Institut Convergences Migrations)/Policy Department. CNRS. Paris, Member of the steering Committee of the Mixed Migration Hub (MHub)/ (ANMMNA: Academic Network on Mixed Migration in North Africa”/IOM & CMRS/American University in Cairo (AUC), He was Co-I. Horizon in the FUME Project (Future migration scenarios for Europe. Migration patterns – Local perspectives – Future scenarios), Steering Committee member of the EuroMedMig (Mapping European Mediterranean Migration/ Jean Monnet Network)/ Leader: Universitat Pompeu Fabra/Barcelona), and lecturer and supervisor at the High School of Interior Security Forces.
Hanen Ben Othman
Being a holder of an MA in European Union Law and Europe- Maghreb relations and a Ph.D in public law, I am currently working as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Law and political sciences of Sousse, Tunisia. My dissertation investigates the displacement of irregular migrants and European Union Law. I am also an academic researcher interested in issues related to migration and the right to asylum.My strong interest in these topics has pushed me to participate in various seminars and conferences. My expertise in this field has been recognised by many NGOs which solicited my participation in their workshops. I have recently participated in a conference about irregular migration within the scope of the protection of human beings and security conditions.
Manel Kacem
Manel Kacem is Assistant Professor in Quantitative Methods at the Institute of High Commercial Studies (IHEC) of Sousse. She is also a member of the Institute of French Actuaries. She obtained her PhD degree in applied mathematics in financial and actuarial sciences from the Institute of Financial Science and Insurance (ISFA) at Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University. She participated in several research projects in the field of actuarial sciences, quantitative finance and applied statistics. She teaches mainly Actuarial Sciences, Econometrics, Statistics and Probability and Risk Management.
Rim Mosbeh
Doctor in Management Sciences, graduate of the University of Toulouse1-Capitole/IAE Toulouse and the University of Carthage, IHEC Carthage, Rim Mosbeh is currently Assistant Professor at the Higher Institute of Management in Sousse. She is also in charge of the PAQ Project (Quality Support Program) in Hospitality and Tourism Management at the ISG in Sousse. In addition, She is a member of the quality committee, the gender unit and the steering committee for the University of Sousse's self-evaluation project. She is also a member of the Career and Competency Certification Center (4C) at ISG Sousse. In addition, she organized several events (conference on "Post-covid Tourism: Resilience and Crisis Management" in December 2021, participation as a member of the organizing committees for the 5th International Symposium on Tourism in the Arab World (October 2022), the International Symposium on the Quality of Higher Education (November 2022), and the 55th session of the Federation of Arab Universities Congress (March 2023), two Job Fairs in collaboration with TUI, the world's leading tour operator, in May 2022 and April 2023...).
The fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime on December 8, 2024, and the rise of Ahmad al-Sharaa to power created an important opportunity for refugees to return to their country, and the hopes of some Syrian refugees to fulfill. However, United Nations indicates that the number of those who returned does not exceed 65,000 out of 650,000 refugees data . Opinion polls confirmed that 72% of refugees do not consider returning under the current circumstances, which necessitates understanding the underlying reasons for this.
