One of the key objectives of the GAPS project is to organize Stakeholder Expert Panels (SEPs) in partner countries in order to bring our research closer to the ground and to facilitate a productive relationship between different sectors working on return and with returnees. As advertised in the GAPs News feed, SEP activities continue to take place in many countries. Stakeholder Expert Panel (SEP) meetings on return migration in Turkey, Iraq, and Afghanistan each explored the complex challenges surrounding migrant returns and reintegration. In Turkey, the panel emphasized the geopolitical, legal, and ethical complexities of return migration, particularly in the context of agreements with the EU and neighboring countries, as well as the difficulties faced by returnees in reintegrating socially and economically. The Iraq panel focused on the challenges posed by political instability and security concerns, highlighting the need for sustainable reintegration strategies and the role of international support. In Afghanistan, discussions centered on the particular vulnerabilities of returnees in a fragile post-conflict environment, emphasizing the importance of coordinated international efforts and long-term reintegration policies.
